Minerals are vital inorganic substances which are very necessary for the body and used in a very little amount in our daily diet. Generally, minerals are acidic in nature but sodium, potassium and magnesium are basic in nature.

Classification
Basically, we can classify them into 2 types
1) Micronutrients.                
2) Macronutrients.

Division of minerals is dependent on their presence in our body such as the minerals which we intake more than 100 mg. are called macronutrients and which are taken less than 20 mg. are called Micronutrients.

Micronutrients are iron, fluorine, copper, zinc, iodine chromium, cobalt.
Macronutrients are calcium, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, chlorine, sulfur, magnesium.

Functions
They help to regulate the Water balance, they ignite the gastric juices which are important to digestion, also help to regulate the heartbeat. Necessary to synthesize of some important hormones. They help to maintain the balance of osmotic pressure and acid and base too. They help to build up soft tissues, hemoglobin, bones and teeth.

Sources
Milk or milk products for calcium.
Milk products, eggs, meat, fish, legumes, peas, corn, beans, cabbage, cauliflower for phosphorus. Pumpkin seeds are the best source of phosphorus. Salt, meat and seafood for sodium. Cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, tomato, olive, seaweed for chlorine. Iodised salt, milk and milk products, yogurt, seafood for iodine.Liver, organ meat, legumes, red meat, pumpkin seeds for iron. Potato, peas, mushroom, cucumber, cooked broccoli for potassium. Meat, shellfish, legumes, eggs, whole grains for zinc. Tuna, Oyster, wheat pasta, mushroom, pork, seeds, beef for selenium. Seafood, nuts, legumes like beans peas, cabbage, seeds, asparagus for magnesium.

Deficiency
Definitely of vitamin D due to lack of calcium, lower serum level in protein, weakness, nausea, low blood pressure, anorexia. Goiter due to lack of iodine and myxedema ( lower level of thyroid hormones in the blood). Microcytic hypochromic anemia and anemia. Hypocalcemia of potassium. The dental decay of fluoride ..................... loss of appetite, changes in skin, hair loss, dwarfism, weak healing of zinc. Cardiac shock due to less selenium.
Anemia inhibited enzyme synthesis, weak fertility, colour changes in hair due to less copper.

Fat accumulation in the liver, reduce the activity of enzymes, bone decay weak fertility of manganese. Mental disorder, high blood pressure, asthma, osteoporosis in lack of magnesium.
